A RECORD crowd has cheered Rory McIlroy on to victory in the Genesis Scottish Open.
More than 70,000 people packed The Renaissance Club, near Dirleton, as the four-time Major winner sunk a last-hole birdie to defeat Robert MacIntyre by a single stroke on Sunday.
The DP World Tour confirmed that the total attendance over the four days was 72,517 – up more than 3,500 from last year and the highest since the tournament moved to links courses in 2011.
A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: “East Lothian was delighted to be the host of the Genesis Scottish Open on Scotland’s Golf Coast, which attracted 72,517 spectators – the highest ever at The Renaissance Club over the last five years of being hosted at this great venue.
“The organisation from the European Tour and its partners and various East Lothian Council departments ensured that those who attended were treated to a memorable experience and a wonderful few days of golfing prowess from some of the world’s top players. Congratulations to all involved.
“The event not only brings benefits to the local economy in terms of economic impact and in the PR value, showcasing East Lothian to a world-wide audience, but also in terms of local communities.
“For example, during the tournament, young people were given the opportunity to learn about the careers they can pursue via the sport, take part in a beach clean and seashore safari, funds were raised for local charities, and donations were made to East Lothian Foodbank.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the Scottish Open back to East Lothian in 2024.”
Malcolm Duck, chairman of Gullane Area Community Council, which also covers Dirleton and Aberlady, said: “It was a fantastic event.
“It was disappointing that Rob MacIntyre missed out but congratulations to Rory McIlroy. He is one of the best and deserved it in the end.
“Those behind the event did well managing the weather and overall it was a great tournament with some great crowds.”
The ward’s councillors were also full of praise for the event and its impact on the area.
Councillor Liz Allan highlighted its lasting impact and said: “I am so proud of the Scottish Open. Really, it is such a pleasure to see East Lothian out there looking so beautiful.
“It is a great place to be and I think the golf really promotes East Lothian as a wonderful place.
“One of things I would say is, because it is out there and so many people see it on television, this incredible event, it really does highlight that we are the Golf Coast.
“I was talking to a group of German men, who had come over to play golf all over East Lothian.
“One of the reasons they were here was they had seen the Scottish Open in previous years.
“They had watched the Scottish Open and it really stuck with them as to what an amazing place this really is.”
Ward colleague Councillor Jeremy Findlay was similarly pleased with the event’s success.
East Lothian has held the tournament for each of the last five years.
In 2018, it took place at Gullane Golf Club before making the short trip to The Renaissance Club the following year. It will continue to be held at the prestigious venue until at least 2026.
Mr Findlay said: “Congratulations to Rory McIlroy for winning a superb event but also to Bob MacIntyre for coming a close second.
“The event once again demonstrated East Lothian’s premier position as Scotland’s Golf Coast and showcased the whole tourism sector to an international audience.
“This kind of event promotes not just golf courses but accommodation providers, food and drink operators, as well as the many shops and businesses in the area.
“I am sure everyone looks forward to next year and maybe an announcement of when The Open is coming back to Muirfield.”
