LADIES’ and gents’ champion of champions were crowned over the weekend, writes Matt Osborne.

Macmerry Bowling Club hosted the 2024 semi-finals, where Jock Mclean (East Linton) overcame Luke Newlands (Athelstaneford) 21-13 and Gordon White (Aberlady) prevailed against John McCrorie (Tranent) 21-12.

In the ladies’ event, Jen Newlands (East Linton) posed all the questions in her 21-3 win over Emily Johnston (Ormiston), while Dee Hoggan (Tranent) completed the finals line-up following her 21-15 win over Linda Wilson (West Barns).

White took advantage of some earlygame momentum to build a healthy 14-5 lead in the final, while Hoggan edged ahead 8-4 in her final against Newlands.

White continued his run of scoring ends and opened a 19-9 lead.

Mclean did respond and a trio of ends had White in his sights at 19-13.

But two singles ended the Mclean fightback two ends later, as White claimed the gents’ trophy 21-13.

There was little to split the two ladies over the majority of their game.

Hoggan held onto her early lead at 10-8 before a run of three, three and two had her on the brink of victory at 18-10.

An umpire’s measure for three shots was agonisingly close but resulted in just two shots.

She sealed the victory at the next end with the single required to claim the ladies’ title, adding to her previous 2013 victory.

Meanwhile, Port Seton finished their season off in style as they claimed the 2024 Courier Cup.

The competition sees the champions from across the four divisions meet in a season-closing playdown.

Division Three champions East Linton A saw off the challenge of Division Four winners Gullane in the morning semi-final, while Port Seton defeated Division Two champions Elphinstone in the other semi-final clash.

A blistering start by Port Seton in the final meant East Linton A had a near-20- shot deficit to overturn after just five ends.

East Linton did briefly find answers on one of the rinks as they drew level on their individual scoreboard but fell further behind on the other two rinks.

Port Seton continued to push their advantage to the end, winning 56-26 overall.
