THE future looks bright for a county cricket club after it sealed a fifth successive promotion.

Bass Rock Cricket Club have risen through the ranks after joining the East of Scotland leagues.

Last weekend, they sealed promotion to ESCA Division Two, finishing with victory over Selkirk.

Nick Murden has been involved with the club for more than a decade and now captains the first team.

He said: “We have been on a bit of an expansion the last five years.

“We previously were pretty much a friendly club, playing social cricket, Twenty20 stuff, and then we decided to start a Saturday team.

“We had one team in the East League and started in the bottom division, Division Seven.

“It has just been a roaring success.

“We set up a second team three seasons ago and they are in the bottom league, Division Eight.

“We have had promotion every year, five years in a row.

“We have got some pretty good, experienced players and what we have found is, because we like to have a laugh, we have got a good reputation, good links with good players, a lot of which are dads having had kids and coming back into the game.”

And while there are a number of dads in the two Bass Rock sides, the future looks in safe hands as well.

Mr Murden, who lives in the town, highlighted that there were plans for sides for teenagers looking to try the sport.

He added: “In the first team, we had a 14-year-old playing.

“We have people in their twenties, thirties, forties and fifties all in the same team.

“We have members from five different continents – players from India, Australia, South Africa, North America and Europe.

“It is just a good vibe at the club and we are pretty proud of it.”

Promotion to Division Two comes on the back of just two defeats all season – with one of those coming at home to county rivals Haddington.

The first-team captain did not rule out a promotion bid again next term.

He said: “We will give it a good go.

“Generally, we are not desperate to keep on going up and up, but we just want to play hard, play well.

“I think we play in the right spirit and whatever happens, happens.

“The bigger picture is that we are proud of what we are doing to establish cricket formally in North Berwick.”
