A team from the Thorntree Golf Club, a club based at the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, were victorious in this year’s Musselburgh Challenge.

The tournament, Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club’s 23rd Musselburgh Challenge, was played over nine holes at the town’s famous links, using hickory golf clubs.

Musselburgh Old Course, known as the “cradle of golf”, celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2022. It is one of only 14 British golf courses to have hosted The Open Championship, with six held in Musselburgh between 1874 and 1889.

In the Musselburgh Challenge, two pairs from each club play a four-ball medal round, with the combined scores of the four players from each club determining the result.

This year saw 12 teams, including The R&A Golf Club of St Andrews and Prestwick who, together with Musselburgh, were the three original venues of The Open, compete.

Musselburgh’s vice-captain Gordon Henderson presented the victors with the trophy and thanked everyone for participating in the “spirit of friendship and camaraderie which was totally in keeping with the historical values of the event”.

David MacLellan, captain of Prestwick Golf Club, gave a vote of thanks and complimented Musselburgh Old Course members for their hospitality.
