TWO or three additions are needed to help transform Preston Athletic into genuine promotion-contenders next season, according to co-manager Paul Currie.
The Prestonpans side wrapped up their league fixtures with a win at Oakley United on Saturday to finish seventh in the East of Scotland Football League (EoSFL) First Division.
They then defeated Whitburn – who won promotion from Preston’s division – on Tuesday evening to reach the semi-finals of the League Cup, where they will play host to fellow county side Haddington Athletic from the division above.
But Currie, alongside fellow co-manager John Daly, has already started shaping his squad for next year.
He said: “We have two or three positions we would like to strengthen.
“Honestly, we do not need much at all.
“It is probably two or three that are really going to improve us that we will be signing.
“It is not just anybody that becomes available that we try to sign.
“Management is still new to me and I have said this season I have probably been too gung-ho at times and thought ‘let’s go and get him’.
“This season, we are going to have to think of the right players for the club, the players we need, and things like that.”
Already, the squad has been strengthened with the addition of Lloyd Fiddler, from nearby Musselburgh Athletic.
The midfielder has made 75 appearances for the Olivebank side and has also played with Haddington Athletic and Dunbar United in the past.
Currie revealed that he was someone he had wanted to see in the blue of Preston for a while.
He said: “He will be an excellent signing.
“He was really good for Musselburgh at the beginning of the season.
“He hurt his ankle, started his own business and fell out of it.
“I have been trying to sign him, even on loan, the whole season.
“I am delighted to get him in.
“That is the kind of signing we need to make to ultimately challenge.
“That is basically where everybody wants to be.
“Everybody behind the club works really hard to get the best stuff for us and we want to give something back.”
The Pennypit men have been one of the form teams in the EoSFL in recent weeks.
Seven wins in their last eight games in all competitions propelled them away from the lower reaches of the table.
Currie told Courier Sport: “We have been absolutely delighted recently.
“It is probably our best spell of the season.
“Before we went on this run, we had not won back-to-back games all season.
“If we want to be challenging at the top, there has to be a certain amount of consistency.”
