INSPIRATION from last year’s “great escape” could help Ormiston Primrose to avoid relegation once again.
Richie Weir’s men looked destined to make the drop to the bottom tier of the East of Scotland Football League (EoSFL) last term before a stunning run of form kept them up.
Now, with five games to go, the manager has called on his team to once again defy the doubters and stay up.
He said: “We’ve touched on what we did last season. The Great Escape last season showed that we can do it.
“This season, like last season, we had to win something like seven out of nine games. Last season, we had harder games to play.”
The New Recreation Park side trail Tweedmouth Rangers by 13 points. However, they have five games to play in comparison to their rival’s two.
Promisingly, four of those five games are against teams round about them, including a double-header with doomed Edinburgh United and a home contest with relegated Newburgh.
The manager spoke to Courier Sport on Tuesday afternoon as he got ready to travel to Kennoway Star Hearts, who visit Ormiston this evening (Thursday) at 7.30pm in a quickfire rematch – the Fife side were 4-0 winners on Tuesday.
Weir acknowledged Tweedmouth still had “the edge” when it came to staying up but he was hopeful Ormiston could make a go of it.
After this evening’s game, the county side face four matches in just eight days, including a home clash with champions-elect Bo’ness Athletic.

The manager said: “There is not a night off or anything in between.
“On Saturday, we have got Newburgh and then going into Monday against Bo’ness. Usually, it would be Saturday into Tuesday. That will be the one where players are probably a bit sore.”
The club’s survival chances were boosted on Saturday when they pulled off the result of the day and demolished Easthouses Lily 7-0. Scott Moffat scored a hat-trick while Dylan Hamilton, Ben Maxwell, Pol Adrian and Jacques Crane also found the target.
Weir felt his side had played well in recent weeks and deserved the result.
He said: “The final 7-0 result took us by surprise but the game was one we thought we could win. That was pleasing on our part.”
