A TRIO of East Lothian athletes will fly the flag for Scotland at a prestigious international competition later this summer.
Corey Campbell, Stefan Krawiec and Heidi Dawson have been named as part of the country’s squad for the Commonwealth Youth Games.
The event takes place in Trinidad and Tobago, August 4-11, and has a proven record of uncovering future champions at senior level.
Scotland has previously been represented by athletes including Lynsey Sharp, Eilish McColgan, Zoey Clark, Nick Percy and Erin Wallace.
Campbell, of Dunbar, was confirmed as part of the athletics team last week.
The Team East Lothian (TEL) athlete will represent Scotland in both the 1,500m and 3,000m, and is one of eight Scottish athletes heading to the Caribbean.
A Scottish and British under-17 record holder, Campbell was a finalist over 1,500m at last year’s European Under-18 Championships.
In the last year, he has competed in Israel, Norway and America and said: “It is an honour to be selected to represent Scotland at this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games.
“I am very much looking forward to going to Trinidad and Tobago and believe my previous international experience will help me at these Games.
“It will be a great experience competing and meeting all the athletes from the Commonwealth that will be there.”
East Lothian Swim Team member Krawiec will be joined at the international competition by coach Jamie Ward.
The swimmer claimed a bronze at last year’s European Youth Olympics and was looking forward to getting back in the pool, where he will compete in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, as well as 100m and 200m butterfly.
The former Ross High School pupil, who is awaiting his exam results, told Courier Sport how he wanted “to make Tranent Amateur Swimming Club, East Lothian Swim Team and country proud”.
The 17-year-old said: “Having competed in European Youth Olympics in 2022, European Juniors (next week) and now Commonwealth Youth Games in August, each competition is really important and gives me new goals and things I want to achieve.
“I like to embrace all the opportunities to learn and to improve with every competition I take part in.”
There were a maximum of eight places available for swimmers heading to the event, with Krawiec, who lives in Prestonpans, joined by colleagues from across Scotland.
Dawson, 17, was looking forward to making the trip at the beginning of August.
She is part of a 10-woman squad who are all aged between 15 and 18 years old.
She said: “It was very unexpected.
“I was not expecting to be selected and it is such a small group of people. I was very shocked and it is very exciting.
“I did a training camp at the weekend and that was six hours a day.
“I’ve got another one on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and then it keeps going every weekend.
“I’m really looking forward to going to Trinidad and Tobago – I have never been to the Caribbean before.
“That will be good and the furthest I have travelled for a competition.
“That will be really good and to spend time with my team as well.”
