SWIMMERS from across East Lothian have taken home a staggering 35 individual medals from the first round of a major championships.
East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) – made up of the best young swimmers from Haddington, Musselburgh and Tranent swim clubs – was among those competing at the East District Championships held in Glenrothes over the weekend.
The first round covered the distance events – 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle, as well as the 400m individual medley (IM).
The boys’ medal winners were as follows:
In the 14 years’ age group, Conner Aspinall (Haddington) dominated the weekend, winning gold in the three freestyle events and a silver in the 400m IM.
Ross Anderton (Tranent) was also in impressive form, winning one gold (400m freestyle) and three silvers in the 15-year-old age group. Alex Taylor (Tranent) also picked up a couple of bronze medals in 800m and 1,500m freestyle events in the age group.

Zach Slater (Musselburgh) also had a good meet, winning medals in all the events (three silvers and one bronze) in the 16-year-old age group.
Luke Hornsey (Musselburgh) and Stefan Krawiec (Tranent) battled it out in the 17 years’ and over age group. Hornsey won three golds in the freestyle events and a silver in the 400m IM while Krawiec picked up two silvers (400m and 800m freestyle) and a bronze medal (1,500m freestyle).
The girls had an equally impressive medal haul.
In the 13 years’ age group, Lucy Fleming (Tranent) won a gold medal in the 1,500m event and a silver in the 800m freestyle. Eilidh Fee (Tranent) won a bronze in the 400 IM.
Zara Krawiec (Tranent) won medals in all the events in the 14 years age group, winning two golds (both 400m events) and two silvers (800m and 1,500m freestyle). Kirsty Sievwright (Musselburgh) picked up a bronze in the 1,500m event.
Tegan Black (Tranent) also enjoyed a great weekend, medalling in all four events with two golds in the 800m and 1,500m freestyle events and two silvers in the 400m events.
In the 17 years’ and over age group, India Marshall (Musselburgh) won gold in the 1,500m event and a bronze in the 800m freestyle.

Jamie Ward, ELST head coach, was pleased with the performance from the members.
He said: “The East District Championships is a major event in our calendar, with our swimmers competing against the very best swimmers from the Lothians, Borders and Fife across all of the swimming disciplines.
“I was delighted with their performances over these longer distance events and look forward to future successes in rounds two and three of the championships in the New Year.”
Meanwhile, there was also success for the club in Glasgow.
Sam Downie was also competing over the weekend, as he took part at the British Para Winter National Meet.
Downie was in excellent form, smashing his lifetime best in all four of the S8 events he swam in.
He won two golds (100m backstroke and 400m freestyle) and a silver medal (100m freestyle), as well as finishing fourth in 50m freestyle.
