EAST Lothian’s finest young swimmers travelled north to compete in the North District Open Championships, held at the Aberdeen Aquatics Centre.
The meeting attracted some of the best swimmers from across the country.
Being an open championship, swimmers competed against each other regardless of age and thus medalling or qualifying for a final was a significant achievement.
East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) medal winners were:
- Luke Hornsey – won a gold in the 1,500m and a bronze in the 200m freestyle events;
- Stefan Krawiec – won a silver in the 800m freestyle and two bronze medals in the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley (IM).
- Hornsey and Krawiec also teamed up with sisters Helen and Louisa Stoddart to claim bronze in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay.
In addition to these medallists, the following swimmers also made finals: Eilidh Armstrong, Tegan Black, Lauren Clark, Grace Courtney, Abby Davis, Zara Krawiec, Anna Lawson, Calum Peebles, Zach Slater, Helen Stoddart and Louisa Stoddart.
Sam Downie also swam fantastically to break the Scottish national (short course) record for the S8 200m backstroke, in a time of 2m29:86s.
Jamie Ward, ELST head coach, was delighted with all the swimmers’ efforts.
He said: “At this point in the year, we are focusing on process over performance and making sure our swimmers develop the skills needed to have a successful season.
“So to have such a successful meet is a pleasant surprise and bodes well for the group as we develop through the season.”
