LEWIS Rollo walked away from a more-than-100mph crash at Donington Park in his last race meeting.
The weekend’s meeting began in impressive fashion for the racer, who qualified in second position on the grid for the race after smashing the lap record at the track.
However, there had only been a handful of laps in the opening race of round three of the Pirelli National Superstock Championship when he came off his Honda.
He said: “There was no injury – I just got a bit battered and bruised.
“It was at around 120mph, so it was quite a big one.
“I was winded and got up and another bike had collided with my bike.
“By the time you are spinning through the air and rolling upside down a few times, you have not picked much up and, by the time you stop, you get on your feet and get out of the road in case another bike hits you.”
The disappointment was compounded by the race being stopped soon afterwards due to a second crash.
With the race restarted, Rollo had no recorded time and had to start from 33rd position in the 36-rider field for the second race of the weekend.
He fought through the pack to take 13th spot and three points but was left disappointed after what had shaped up to be an impressive weekend.
In the five races so far this season, Rollo has failed to finish twice, with mechanical issues also hampering his surge through the field at Donington Park.
The 23-year-old joked he was going to start walking under ladders in a bid to change his luck.
Speaking about starting at the back, he said: “I would just rather be up the front and winning.
“It is one of those where it is quite a dangerous rule that they have got.
“You have got riders at the back who are a lot faster and trying to make their way through and still want to win or do as best as they can.
“When coming through the pack, there are quite a few dodgy moves that you have to do but it is the same for everybody.
“Hopefully my luck changes and I get this podium.
“That is every track where we have been under the lap record and we have been on the front row at two out of three rounds.
“We have shown how strong we are and the potential.”
Attention now turns to Knockhill this month, with Rollo and the Padgetts Motorcycles team aiming to take the chequered flag and move up the championship standings.
The trip to the Fife circuit also gives Rollo, who lives between Gifford and Haddington, the chance to race in front of a home crowd.
He said: “Knockhill is mega. It is obviously one of the tracks that I know the best out of them all.
“I have done, in my younger years, a lot of laps round there and it is a place I enjoy going to because I know the staff who work there and it is a nice atmosphere with having friends and family there. They take your mind off it and you can have a laugh between races.
“You have all the Scottish flags at the side of the track as well and it is just a confidence builder.”
