EAST Lothian Swim Team (ELST) – made up of swimmers from Haddington, Musselburgh and Tranent swim clubs – has been competing on two fronts.
Twenty-five ELST swimmers, including Sam Downie, Luke Hornsey, Stefan Krawiec and Calum Peebles, who were representing the Scottish National Junior Team, qualified for the Glasgow International Swim Meet held at Tollcross Swimming Centre (May 27-29).
This is a prestigious event with elite adult and junior swimmers from around the world competing, including strong teams from Denmark and Iceland.
The following ELST swimmers made finals: Ross Anderton, Eilidh Armstrong, Tegan Black, Grace Courtney, Luke Hornsey, Stefan Krawiec, Zara Krawiec, Calum Peebles, Zach Slater, Helen Stoddart and Owen Williamson.
Armstrong, Stefan Krawiec, Hornsey, Peebles and Stoddart finished in the top three in junior finals.
The team also competed at the Haddington Total Swimmer Meet (May 29) held at the Mercat Gait Centre in Prestonpans.
This is an event that looks to find the best all-round swimmer, with all athletes competing in five events – 100m individual medley (IM) and 50m backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle – with points awarded for where each swimmer places in each event.
The top six swimmers then compete in a 200IM final to determine the ‘total swimmer’ in each age group.
ELST medal winners/finalists were:
- Girls 11/12 years – Lucy Hall (Haddington) won gold, with Eva Kay and Lucy Fleming (both Tranent) winning silver and bronze. Eilidh Fee (Tranent), Ava Gray and Anna Lawson (both Musselburgh) qualified for the final.
- Boys 11/12 years – Haddington swept the board, with Conner Aspinall, Boyd Fearnside and Alex Prest winning gold, silver and bronze respectively.
- Girls 13/14 years – Isla Whetton (Haddington) won bronze. Caitlin Peebles and Grace Hanak (both Tranent) made the final.
- Boys 13/14 years – Tranent swimmers Declan Kay and Alex Taylor won gold and bronze respectively, with Ethan Mulligan (Haddington) splitting them to win the silver medal. Joel Begg (Musselburgh) and Lewis Lothian (Haddington) both qualified for the final.
- Girls 15 and over – Eilidh Armstrong (Musselburgh) won gold, with Katie Anderton (Tranent) winning bronze and Beth Taylor (Tranent) making the final.
Jamie Ward, ELST head coach, was delighted with the swimmers’ performances. He said: “It was brilliant to see so many of the team competing over the weekend, with fantastic results across the board. These meets set us up nicely for end-of-season events where the team will be competing locally, as well as in Aberdeen, Sunderland and Sheffield.”
