LEWIS Rollo was already looking ahead to the new season just hours after the chequered flag was waved for the last time.
The National Superstock 1000 rider has had an eventful year, with a race win at Donington Park and mechanical issues along the way.
He finished fourth at Brands Hatch in the season’s final race, less than a second behind race winner Billy McConnell, to wrap up the action-packed season.
Speaking to Courier Sport the following day, Rollo was already preparing for the 2022 campaign.
He said: “We’ve got plans but I am not allowed to say yet.
“Next year is going to be good if we get everything sorted out.
“We have got good plans and we, hopefully, take that next step forward and see what I can do in the next step of my career.”
Rollo, who lives between Gifford and Haddington, had hoped to be challenging for the prestigious title this season.
However, an inconsistent campaign eventually saw him finish in eighth spot in the championship on his Kawasaki.
There were promising moments, including a podium at Donington in August before victory at the Leicestershire circuit at the beginning of last month.
The season came to a conclusion at Brands Hatch, with Rollo once again in the thick of the action.
Eleventh in qualifying, Rollo powered off the starting grid and through to chase down the leading pack.
The former Knox Academy pupil said: “I got a good start and managed to close on the leading group.
“On the last lap, I got into fourth and had a go for third but could not quite make it. We finished 0.9 seconds off the win, so we were there or thereabouts.
“It was good to finish the year on a high and it was a really strong ride.
“Halfway through the race, I was that far away from the lead that I thought I could not do any more but all of a sudden we were catching them.
“I started getting a bit more hungry and trying not to make mistakes but I managed to catch Taylor Mackenzie.
“I got on the back of the leading pack and thought I had done the hard bit catching them and now I had to get past them.
“Taylor made a mistake and I hit into him so that held us up a bit on the last lap.
“The race was meant to be 14 laps but other issues reduced it to 12.
“It was unfortunate because I think if we had the other two laps we could have pushed onto the podium and had a go for the win.”
Rollo joined the RAF Regular and Reserve Kawasaki team at the beginning of the season and was delighted to finish the campaign with the strong showing, finishing less than 0.3 seconds behind Fraser Rogers, who took the last podium spot.
He said: “I cannot thank the team enough for sticking with me.
“It has been a really good year, learning to work with them and hopefully I have a future with them.”
The season might be over but Rollo planned to be not too far away from two wheels – whether that was motocross or mountain biking – before the new season gets under way.
