EUAN Campbell overcame his own doubles partner en route to being crowned the Glasgow Yonex Under-19 Boys’ singles champion.
The former Dunbar Grammar School pupil was competing at the first Scottish Open Under-19 tournament since lockdown at the Sir Craig Reedie Centre in Glasgow.
Campbell, 18, received a bye in the first round before knocking out Richard Adams 21-11, 21-6. That took him through to the quarter-finals, where he defeated Leo McMillan 21-11, 21-19.
The victory set up a clash with his doubles partner Nathan Macpherson, of Stonehaven, with the East Lothian player coming through 21-17, 21-18.
In the final, Campbell came up against number one seed Angus Meldrum, who took the first game 21-19. However, Campbell bounced back to win 22-20, 21-14 to take the title.
Campbell and Macpherson had already joined forces to secure a spot in the doubles final after beating Grant Lewis and Finlay Sherriff, of Stirlingshire, 13-21, 21-14, 21-10 in a long, energy-sapping semi-final.
Unfortunately, Campbell and Macpherson’s complete lack of practice showed as they lost out 21-15, 21-18 to Lanarkshire’s Lewis Hart and Isaac Weir of the Scottish Borders.
Campbell, Hart and Weir had all been in Scotland’s under-17s team in 2019 at the European Championships pre-lockdown.
Campbell also played in the mixed doubles, where he reached the quarter-finals alongside Katie Stewart.
The pairing defeated Daniel Harris and Ella Haime but came unstuck against the number one seeds – and eventual runners-up – Lewis Hart and Jodie Black, losing out 22-20, 21-18.
Meanwhile, in the under-15s boys’ singles, Callum Jack reached the quarter-final stage. The North Berwick teenager defeated Avaneesh Walimbe and Ben Ross before losing out to Tushar Senthilrajaram 18-21, 21-18, 21-18.
Jack, along with Lanna Campbell, also reached the last eight of the under-15s mixed doubles, where they lost out to Jackson Smith and Shannon Leslie.
Finally, Jack, along with Fraser Banks, topped group D in the boys’ doubles to reach the quarter-finals. The pairing progressed to the semi-finals after defeating Michael Lawson and Tushar Senthilrajaram before losing out to eventual winners Lewis Smith and Ewan Stewart.
