TWO rugby stars helped Scotland Women end a breakthrough campaign with a second title at the weekend.
North Berwick’s Megan Gaffney and Lizzi Musgrove, who stays near Drem, helped the Scotland Women 7s side to victory in the second leg of the Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Trophy in Hungary.
The side, coached by former professional player Scott Wight, started with a 41-0 win over Malta before posting another shutout win as they thrashed Finland 38-0.
A 45-0 win over the Czech Republic ended day one, when both East Lothian players finished with two tries.
Sunday saw a cup quarter-final drubbing of Latvia, as both Gaffney and Musgrove added to their try tally in a 50-0 demolition job.
Former North Berwick High School pupil Gaffney then crossed for a double in the 32-0 victory over Romania in the last four, which secured promotion to the Grand Prix of next year’s series.
The only blemish on the Scots’ copybook came in the final – a repeat of the first leg in the Czech Republic last month as Germany were the opposition.
Three tries – including one from Gaffney – saw Wight’s side lead 19-0 at the interval.
Gaffney scored again in the second half as Scotland clinched victory, despite Germany registering the first points against Wight’s team all weekend.
Scotland Women were unbeaten as they lifted the trophy, and scored 81 tries in the process, conceding only two.
Afterwards, Wight said: “The highlight for me was seeing what the players were actually capable of.
“It was easy going coaching-wise because they always wanted to learn. They were always asking what they can do to improve as an individual but also in their roles within the squad.
“The amount of enthusiasm the players were coming to training with has been most enjoyable thing.”
Returning to the Rugby Europe Grand Prix next year puts Scotland Women 7s a step closer to their long-term aims of qualifying for the HSBC Women’s Sevens Series and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
