IN THE last few weeks, I met with our newly elected MP Douglas Alexander at my bequest to discuss how we can work closely together in the next few years to support our constituents.

We discussed some issues that we could work together on – economic development, poverty, growing business in East Lothian – and will meet on a regular basis. I also meet with Labour council leader Norman Hampshire and my Labour MSP colleague Martin Whitfield.

In an interview on the recent anniversary of the independence referendum, Douglas stated that referendums were like “battery acid” burning through old loyalties as he claimed the SNP and Labour were locked in a “mortal struggle”.

It's not a phrase I would use. East Lothian is now a swing constituency after years of Labour control. Elections are always contested in a respectful manner.

Douglas also said the SNP had to “destroy” his own party if they wanted to achieve independence – again, not a phrase I would use. I want to see the people of Scotland make their own choice of government, be that a Labour government or otherwise, in an independent Scotland.

Douglas also said of the rivalry between the SNP and Labour: “It’s not a world exclusive that I am not a great fan of nationalism. My politics is about co-operation, interdependence and solidarity."

Can I advise Douglas Alexander that I share those values? Independence delivers those values that Douglas and I share, and so does every other independent nation.

I look forward to continuing working with Douglas and Labour colleagues in the future.
