PUPILS at a Prestonpans primary school will not return to school tomorrow (Wednesday).
Emergency gas works on South Grange Avenue, near St Gabriel’s Primary School and Nursery, saw children evacuated today (Tuesday).
Youngsters were moved to St Gabriel’s Church Hall while the work was ongoing and parents and carers were asked to collect their children.
East Lothian Council has already confirmed that more than 150 children were evacuated from the school and nursery, while two nearby homes were also evacuated.
A spokesperson for the local authority said this evening: “Following a repair to the network at South Grange Avenue today, SGN has advised that further investigation works are required around the St Gabriel’s Primary School campus.
“While this happens, and on safety grounds, the school and nursery will remain closed tomorrow (November 27).

“We hope to reopen on November 28.
“Parents and carers have been informed and the headteacher will contact them about arrangements for children’s learning on Wednesday.
“We will update families tomorrow about arrangements for reopening.
“The road remains closed at South Grange Avenue between Grange Grove and Grange Crescent East.”
Nicola McDowell, head of education at the local authority, thanked parents and carers for their “patience”.

She said: “Although the repair has been completed, SGN has advised that further investigation works are required around the school campus.
“While this happens, and on safety grounds, the school and nursery will remain closed tomorrow (Wednesday).
“We hope to reopen on Thursday (November 28).
"While I appreciate that this may be disappointing, it is vital that we follow this essential advice.
“Mr Buchanan [headteacher] will contact you separately about children’s learning for Wednesday.
“We are grateful for your support and I will update you further tomorrow on our reopening arrangements.”
