A TREE believed to be about 90 years old is set to be cut down in North Berwick tomorrow (Wednesday).
According to East Lothian Council, the horse chestnut tree in the Lodge Grounds has been monitored for several years following the detection of wood decay fungi, but due to "decay" and in the "interests of public safety", it will now be felled.
The tree is located near the Quality Street entrance, which will be closed for the duration of the process, with visitors asked to follow diversions.

A replacement tree will be planted next year.
A council spokesperson said: “The condition of the horse chestnut tree in the Lodge Grounds has been monitored for several years following the detection of wood decay fungi.
“The tree has previously been pruned to reduce the weight of certain limbs and to decrease the loading on the stem, but the decay has now reached a level that no amount of crown reduction works will lower the potential risk of future failure.
“A recent inspection has determined the tree must be removed in the interests of public safety, as it has sadly reached the end of its safe life.
“The removal works are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 27.
"The Quality Street entrance will be closed for the duration and visitors to the Lodge Grounds should follow any signage.
“A replacement tree will be planted in the New Year.”
North Berwick Community Council released a statement, saying: "Sad news today. We have been advised by ELC that the big chestnut tree at the Quality Street entrance to the Lodge is unsafe and needs to be taken down.
"The good news is that a new tree will be planted and hopefully will be there for hundreds of years to come."
