ATHELSTANEFORD Primary School and Nursery have received a positive inspection report.

The school, which serves the village and surrounding area, has 49 children across three multi-stage classes, with 14 children attending the nursery.

The inspection report ranked the school as 'good' in the learning, teaching and assessment section.

The report noted that "all staff work well together to create a positive, nurturing culture, and have developed strong, trusting relationships across the school community".

It also highlighted that teachers ensure that teaching in classes is "underpinned by shared values and aims".

The report said: "In almost all lessons, teachers’ instructions are clear and most children understand the purpose of their learning.

"The headteacher and teachers meet termly to discuss individual children’s attainment."

The school also received a 'good' rating in the raising attainment and achievement category.

The report stated: "Overall, most children achieve expected levels of attainment in literacy and numeracy.

"Overall, most children make good progress in reading and talking and listening."

There was a clear emphasis noted on how the school promoted achievement.

The report stated: "All children in the school and nursery have opportunities to achieve.

"They are proud of the skills and attributes they are developing through a range of activities."

However, the report suggested some small improvements.

It said: "The headteacher, teachers and practitioners should work together to streamline the planning and tracking formats used in the school and nursery.

"This should help them to identify more clearly children’s progress in learning.

"The headteacher and teachers should work together to ensure that all learning activities provide appropriate levels of challenge for all children at the primary stages.

"This should help children to make the best possible progress in their learning and raise attainment."

Following the report, East Lothian Council stated: "This is a very positive report and we are pleased that inspectors recognised the warm, friendly and inclusive ethos at Athelstaneford Primary School and Nursery Class, as well as children feeling safe, secure and happy.

"We welcome the identification of some areas for improvement which are consistent with the school’s own self-evaluation. Work is already under way to address these."
