A shop window display on a Home Alone theme is bringing Christmas cheer to passers-by in Musselburgh.

Marianne Hills, manager at Elena Di Rollo ice cream and chocolate shop, which is owned by her mum Elaine, came up with the design as the much-loved movie, starring Macaulay Culkin, is a seasonal favourite of the family.

The window has “gone down a storm” and has been a “massive hit” with all ages since it was unveiled more than a week ago.

Marianne said: “Home Alone is a Di Rollo family Christmas favourite since its release in 1990 and now loved by our children.

“When I pitched my idea to my children, Max and Eva, they excitedly said, ‘Oh mum, that’s the best idea ever!’

“I got the green light from my mum. She thought I was crackers when I asked her for the spare hall carpet from her house to put into the shop window – and so the planning began!”

She said: “As a child back in the ’80s, my mum took my brother and I to see the Jenners Christmas window on Princes Street, where there was a puppet show in the window and just sheer Christmas magic laid out in front of you. I have never forgotten that.

“Then fast forward to the ’90s, where big brands like Cadbury and Suchard would run window-displaying competitions. Elena Di Rollo entered numerous times and won several. One year we won a VHS video recorder, which was first prize. I must get my flair from my parents.”

She added: “This year, I decided it was ‘go big or go home’, keeping it a complete secret.

“We unveiled our Home Alone Christmas window over a week ago and it has gone down a storm.

“The window features Kevin, Marv and Harry, as well as Buzz’s girlfriend.

“There are also lots of memorable props relating to the film, such as flying paint tins, which seem to be the main talking point.”

She said: “One customer cornered me outside and said was this my handiwork, as it was the best thing he had ever seen, and that he had told all his friends about it.

“He loved all the elements and attention to detail.

“Another said ‘I should be proud of that window’, as it was just unbelievable.”

Marianne added: “It has been fantastic to hear the laughter and screams of happiness coming from children and adults outside.

“We have stopped so many people in their tracks and have seen a lot of pointing from people in their cars.

“One car even held up the traffic as they looked at it.

“The best part for me is seeing the reactions of the children that come into our shop. If I get their seal of approval, I am happy and it makes it all worth it.

“It wasn’t about promoting the business, it was capturing the magic of Christmas and passing on that joyful, nostalgic feeling I got when I embraced the Jenners window in Edinburgh all those years ago.

“We just wanted to make people smile this Christmas and spread a little joy.”

She added: “If anyone is passing through Musselburgh, they should swing past the shop on Bridge Street to have a look at the window.

“We are also on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, if you would like to give us a follow and to see more of our Christmas fun!”
