A POLITICIAN is “totally opposed” at the prospect of Haddington’s Post Office closing its doors.

The town centre facility was named on a list of more than 100 branches across the country at risk of potential closure earlier this month.

The Post Office revealed it was looking to offload 115 directly owned branches within its 11,500-strong network.

The Court Street Post Office was named on the list.

Craig Hoy, South Scotland MSP, met with Post Office representative Mark Gibson and highlighted his opposition to the idea.

He said: “Haddington Post Office is well used by local residents and by rural communities living nearby.

“I have been contacted by many people concerned about the closure and I called the meeting to make sure their views and concerns were heard by Post Office bosses.

“I am totally opposed to the closure of the Post Office and will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure the best outcome for residents.

“I am keen to hear what residents think, and I will continue to push for local postal and banking services.”

Mr Gibson told the former Haddington councillor that the nationwide review comes as part of a push to make savings to provide additional money and support for sub-postmasters.

The review could lead to three outcomes: full closure, the transfer of the franchise to a sub-postmaster or changes to present services to make savings.

This could also involve moving the facility to a different premises in the town centre.
