YOUNGSTERS could be learning outdoors at Knox Academy before the end of the school year.

Plans to create a ‘learning garden’ have been given the thumbs up by members of the school’s quadrant committee.

Sue Cook, headteacher at the Haddington school, said: “Pupils will also be given the opportunity to be involved in the creation of the school’s story on the totem pole and also in some of the planting up of the garden itself.

“Once finished, by May 2025 at latest, this will become an outdoor classroom, which various subjects across the school will put to good use for learning and teaching.

“The design has been based around being eco-friendly and sustainability. Exciting times!

“Thank you to all who contributed to the group or fed back to us on the designs.”

East Linton-based Tree-ditions has been tasked with creating the outdoor classroom at the secondary school.

They outlined a potential layout for the learning garden, with the school highlighting a drawing of how the garden could look.

As well as a potting shed and fruit trees, there are also plans for an interactive water feature, wild flower garden and sculptures.

A document from Tree-ditions included on the school’s website reads: “The learning garden will be a beautiful practical space for pupils and staff to immerse themselves.

“It will offer learning opportunities for students to study sciences, art, geography, horticulture and be surrounded by interesting small spaces, each offering multiple learning opportunities.”

Money from the family of a former Dux at the school will go towards the project.

Previously, Miss Cook outlined that the family were “passionate about outdoor learning and gardening”.
