NORTH Berwick's Christmas lights will be switched on on Saturday, as a whole day of activities takes place.

Organised by North Berwick Community Council, the switch-on ceremony gets started at 5.30pm, but before the BBC's Glenn Campbell does the honours, there are lots of events everyone can get involved in.

The fun gets under way at the Abbey Church on Church Street, 10am-4pm, with activities for the community, free children's art workshops, glitter tattoos and letters to Santa.

Herbspace will also be at the Abbey Church between 10.30am and 3.30pm with a festive market, selling locally crafted products.

Parking and road closures on High Street start at 3pm.

At 5pm, the parade will begin from the east end of High Street, with a number of community groups taking part, including Voices, Freedom & Form, Little Artists, Sister Sister Choir, North Berwick Pipe Band, along with Brain Power and many more, while Santa will make an appearance at 5.30pm.

Just before the switch-on, the prize for best dressed window will be presented. Voting takes place on Facebook, with the winner being the image with the most 'likes' on Facebook by noon that day.

At 5.30pm, the switch-on ceremony will begin. North Berwick Trust donated money to the community council for a new sound system so everyone can hear what is being said.

The trust also donated money for new replacement tree lights which will be placed on four different trees.

Fidra Scaffolding is constructing a stage for the switch-on outside St Andrew Blackadder Church, so all attendees will be able to see what is going on.

Following the switch-on by Glenn Campbell, Side Hustle will perform Christmas pop songs by St Andrew Blackadder Church.

Mairi Benson, chair of North Berwick Christmas Lights, told the Courier: "We are doing some amazing community events throughout the day and everyone is welcome to get involved."

Previously, Kenny Miller, chair of North Berwick Community Council, said: "We normally look for someone with a celebrity status and this year there is no one better than Glenn to switch on the Christmas lights.

"He has done some amazing work fighting against brain tumours and this is another chance for him to raise money for Brain Power, as we will have a bucket for donations.

"Last year's event was great and we hope as many will attend this year."
