TWO parliamentarians have visited Scotland's oldest working brewery.

Douglas Alexander MP and Martin Whitfield MSP toured Belhaven Brewery, which celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2019, to meet with management and see recent investments.

This was Mr Alexander's first visit to the brewery, in Dunbar, since his election as Lothian East MP in July.

He said: "It was great to visit Belhaven Brewery to find out more about its long and proud history as Scotland’s oldest working brewery, as well as the brewing process for its popular ales, stouts and lagers.

"Belhaven is clearly an important part of Greene King’s plans, especially for its pubs across Scotland, and it was good to see for ourselves the investment they are making to modernise and improve the site."

South Scotland MSP Mr Whitfield, who has visited the brewery before and helped to celebrate its 300th anniversary, said: "Belhaven Brewery is an iconic local business, brand and visitor attraction, and I was pleased to visit it again.

"The investment that has been made in new technology and other modernisation since my last visit was clear and underlines the importance of the Belhaven brand.

"I’m grateful to Nick, Matt and their team for taking the time out to update us on the brewery’s latest developments and look forward to hearing more about Belhaven’s progress in the future."

Matt Starbuck, managing director of brewing and group supply chain at Greene King, said: "We were delighted to welcome Douglas and Martin to see some of the multi-million-pound investments we’ve recently made at Belhaven Brewery.

"At such an important time for the pubs and brewing sector, with a steeply rising cost of doing business, we are always pleased to showcase our brewery to East Lothian’s representatives in Westminster and Holyrood to help highlight the economic and social benefit pubs and breweries bring to communities across the UK."
