FED-UP residents are considering selling their home after growing frustrated at lorries travelling to a neighbouring housing development, it has been claimed.

Taylor Wimpey East Scotland was given planning permission for 250 homes at Hallhill North, Dunbar, towards the end of 2021.

Construction started the following year and an order was put in place to close nearby Beveridge Row between the railway bridge and the A1 to allow it to be used solely by construction traffic.

However, concerns have repeatedly been raised that large vehicles are not using that road, which is not due to open to the public for another three years.

Instead, complaints have repeatedly been made that the vehicles are travelling along Yosemite Park.

Councillor Donna Collins, who represents the Dunbar and East Linton ward on East Lothian Council, has raised the issue with the local authority.

She said: “They informed us that they had told their suppliers to use Beveridge Row now and it seems they have told everybody.

“Most of them are using Beveridge Row but some are not.

“The big heavy cranes and kit wagons that are bringing in the kit for the houses are still allowed to use Yosemite Park but at a reduced speed because of the weight of them.”

The councillor stressed that she understood why some people living in the area were frustrated by the large vehicles passing their homes.

She added: “It is not fair and it is dangerous.

“I have seen what happens when a kid goes under a lorry and it is not pleasant.

“They have been told and told and told, and it kind of feels like they are ignoring it.

“The suppliers have been told and they are going back to them again to say it is not happening.

“It needs to get sorted because it is not acceptable for residents and it is a safety issue.”

Jacquie Bell, of Dunbar Community Council, has also been in regular contact with people living in the area about the problem.

She said: “The residents have been there seven or eight years and just had lorries.

“It has just got to the point where they are fed up.”

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: “A TTRO (temporary traffic regulation order) for Beveridge Row traffic is in place for the duration of the Hallhill North development, which is until 2028.

“Taylor Wimpey has advised that, while they continue the Eweford/Beveridge Row for the majority of the construction traffic, certain vehicles cannot access the site using this loop due to their size.

“The company has recently submitted a revised traffic management plan to our planning department which is currently being reviewed and we will continue to monitor the situation.”

A spokesperson for Taylor Wimpey East Scotland said: “As a responsible homebuilder, health and safety is our number-one priority, and we are aware of the local concerns raised regarding HGV traffic accessing our Belhaven Way development in Dunbar.

“We can confirm that Beveridge Row is now used for most HGVs; however, some larger vehicles will continue to use Yosemite Park due to navigational constraints.

“This operational adjustment is detailed in our construction management plan, which has been submitted to East Lothian Council.

“We have also installed a significant amount of signage to be clear to our site traffic about construction routes.

“We have taken the opportunity to provide an update to our contractors regarding the use of Beveridge Row, and we will continue to reinforce this directive following recent feedback from residents.”
