HUTS for family weekend retreats could be created in a semi-ancient woodland near Ormiston.

Plans for Belsis Woods, to the south-west of the county village, have been drawn up by Nick Loening.

An application for four huts is currently being considered by East Lothian Council’s planning department.

A document included in the application outlines that: “These huts will be modest in size and used primarily for family weekend retreats and recreational purposes, designed with an emphasis on low environmental impact and in harmony with the natural woodland setting.”

Access to the huts will come from an existing pedestrian walking track, which follows the natural contours of the woodland.

The supporting statement reads: “The huts will offer a peaceful retreat for family and personal use, while remaining in harmony with the broader values of East Lothian’s rural character and outdoor culture.

“By providing an opportunity for families to connect with nature in a low-impact, sustainable way, the huts will support the Scottish tradition of hutting, which encourages simple living and respect for the natural environment.

“The project aligns with local and national policies aimed at promoting sustainable rural development and responsible outdoor recreation.”

Drawings included with the application show the huts split over two neighbouring sites.
