PROVOST John McMillan has been awarded honorary membership of Haddington Pipe Band.

The band was formed more than 40 years ago and Mr McMillan has been a long-time supporter of the group.

Initially as a parent of a band member, the Haddington and Lammermuir ward councillor has gone on to become a committee member and chairman.

He was awarded honorary membership at the band’s recent annual general meeting.

Mr McMillan told the Courier: "I have known about the pipe band since we moved back to Haddington.

"They used to practise in the rugby club and, when I was in my garden on a Thursday night, I used to love listening to them.

"My younger son, Johnny, soon began to play drums with them and I became involved with the committee.

"I just admired them and the way they teach young people and anybody who is interested in piping and drumming.

"They do that for everybody and I have had so many happy moments with them."

Mr McMillan was "very, very touched" by the award of honorary membership and added: "I was surprised, taken aback and delighted by this.

"They have got a long list of life members.

"It does feel like being part of a family."
