THE layout of a junction in the centre of Haddington could be revisited after concerns were again expressed.
Discussions have taken place regarding whether the junction of Hardgate, Sidegate, High Street and Church Street could be improved.
The matter was again raised at a meeting of Haddington and District Community Council.
Constable Kiera Edmond, the town’s community police officer, told members that she had been in discussions with East Lothian Council, which employs a crossing patrol guide there.
However, she stressed: “It is not going to be a short-term solution but discussions are ongoing.”
Ward councillors George McGuire and Tom Trotter were both in attendance at the meeting.
Mr McGuire highlighted that drivers had to take responsibility for their behaviour at the junction.
He said: “I thought, perhaps, a small mini roundabout which would mean all the traffic gives way to the right.
“Whether that works would be up to the roads engineers.
“Would they be taking out parking space?
“The shops there say they get deliveries and where would they park?
“It’s a fact that we live in a small town, a market town, a lovely place to live and people love it because of what it is.
“Drivers have to be respectful of everybody.”
Meanwhile, Mr Trotter acknowledged that the issue had been raised on a number of occasions.
He highlighted that a suggestion had been made to remove the ‘stop’ sign from the junction and instead put a give way sign in its place.
A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: “We have recently undertaken road resurfacing and upgrading of traffic signals.
"We currently don’t have any further works planned at this time.”
