A GROUP supporting people who are struggling to put food on the table has been described as “a real asset to Haddington and surrounding areas”.
The Lammermuir Larder was established three years ago as people struggled to make ends meet.
Since then, the group, which is based on Haddington’s Church Street, has continued to help people who are struggling financially to feed themselves or their families.
Craig Hoy, South Scotland MSP, met Pat Lemmon and the team to learn more about their valuable work.
The politician, whose office is nearby on Haddington High Street, said: “The service the larder provides meets a clear local need, where people can either be referred by a professional service or self-refer using the website.
“The team sits down with all referrals to understand the root cause of the food insecurity.
“Pat and the team can advise on any changes that could be made, including lifestyle changes, or navigating the complicated benefits system.
“They are a real asset to Haddington and surrounding areas.”
The meeting came as Mr Hoy welcomed a newly-launched initiative – Eat Out and Help Out – where local restaurants Mazzoli at the Tyneside and The Waterside Bistro donate £1 from each bill to the Lammermuir Larder.

Mr Hoy, who previously represented Haddington on East Lothian Council, also learned about the donations that support the larder’s mission.
Donations range from large items including school uniforms, recently donated by Tesco, to smaller goods placed in donation points around the area, as well as financial contributions.
He added: “I’d like to thank everyone who donates to the larder and to those organisations, including local restaurants The Waterside Bistro and Mazzoli for their support for the organisation.”
