A "luxurious" retreat in East Lothian has been named one of the best holiday spots in the whole of the UK.

Introducing the ranking, which included getaways in places like Powys and Suffolk, The Guardian newspaper said: "We pick gorgeous country pads, from Pembrokeshire to the Peak District, that make perfect bases for groups of friends and family get-togethers."

'Luxurious' East Lothian getaway named one of the best holiday spots in the UK

Papple Steading, near Garvald, east of Haddington,  was named one of the best holiday spots in the UK by The Guardian.

It was named alongside two other Scottish locations, including The Sail Loft in Aberdeenshire and Thirlestane Castle in the Scottish Borders.

Discussing the retreat, the newspaper said the spot "comprises a farmhouse and cottage (both sleeping eight) and two bothies (each sleeping two), and from next year a restored granary (sleeping six)."

It added: "Each of the four properties has a kitchen with an Aga, and the farmhouse has a drawing room and a dining room seating 22.

"There is a chill-out wing with library, TV room and garden room, and exclusive use of two hectares (six acres) of lawns, paddocks and woodland.

"Evenings can be spent around the firepit by the ruins of the Papple Convent. The wider grounds have a wildflower meadow and another seven hectares of woodland. And from Drem station, 10 miles away, it’s a 25-minute train journey to Edinburgh."

The retreat, which describes itself as "luxurious" and "environmentally sensitive," has also received praise on Google Reviews.

Users here have given the location a 5/5 with one person writing: "Had such a wonderful stay at the Ploughman's bothy! It was such a peaceful place and the bothy was so comfortable with everything we wanted and more!"

Another added: "Top notch holiday cottages renovated to the highest conservation and eco standards. A fantastic project which aims to preserve the heritage of this 19th century model farm. Lovely area of quiet countryside."
