A CHANCE to pick up a bargain while battling the climate and cost-of-living crises is being offered at a special event in Haddington next weekend.

The Lil ReUse Festival takes place in Knox Academy next Saturday (November 16) and promises a selection of second-hand clothes, shoes, toys, books, homeware, garden items and gifts.

Every shopper pays with vouchers, which can be bought online, at the event, or gifted if cost is a barrier.

Louise Hastie, Lil director, encouraged people to head along to the event between 10am and 2pm.

Items can be donated from November 11 to 15 at the wee Lil lorry parked at the secondary school.

Louise said: “With the festive season just around the corner, the pressure to buy, buy, buy is everywhere.

“But with second-hand treasure waiting to be found at the Lil ReUse Festival, you can make sustainable choices that benefit both the planet and your bank balance.

“We’re so grateful for our community partners that make this event possible, including Knox Academy, East Lothian Council and the National Lottery Community Fund.

“This is a true community effort.”

On average, Scots consume 18.4 tonnes of materials per person every year — the equivalent of 50kg per week.

When it comes to clothing, on average people each spend about £640 annually, yet throw out nearly a million tonnes of textiles, with a third of that barely worn.

Louise added: “By the end of October, we had gifted £10,000 worth of vouchers via partners in East Lothian.

“It shows how much our community values sharing.

“But from previous years, we know that about half of the vouchers we gift go unused. We’re curious to learn why?”
