A DANCE which was traditionally enjoyed after the historic Fisherrow Fishermen’s Walk is set to be repeated again in 2025 after being revived this year.

The event was organised by Jeananne Henderson (née Highley), who has lived in Fisherrow all her life and can trace her fisher roots back many generations through her mother’s side of the family, the Walkers.

She said the sell-out dance, which was held at the Store Club, was a “huge success”, attracting 135 guests.

Dating back many centuries, the walk celebrated the end of the summer herring season and the safe return of the fishermen.

In more recent times, the day of the walk was further extended by a Fishermen’s Dance in the evening, with the fisher folk dancing well into the night, said Jeananne, who decided to bring the social event back to the Honest Toun’s calendar earlier this month.

“We had a wonderful night with everyone joining in, catching up with friends old and new, and truly embracing the spirit of Fisherrow. It was wonderful to see everyone dressed in fishermen’s guernseys and fishwives’ clothes once again,” said Jeananne.

She added: “Some people at the dance were new residents of Fisherrow but were interested in our roots and heritage, and we welcomed their enthusiasm and participation on the night.”

Guests were piped into the venue by Eilidh Alexander, the Lassie Piper, before the evening began with the Highley family’s home movies of the Fishermen’s Walk from the 1960s and 1970s.

They then danced the night away to music by Alex Hodgson’s Ceilidh Band.

Midway through the night, a buffet, prepared by Quinnsters, was enjoyed before a quick game of ‘heads and tails’, with Julie Menzies winning the prize of £50.

Official photographer Carol Edmond was on hand to take photos of family and friends.

At the end of the evening, the band led guests into a sing song of Fisherrow favourites such as ‘The Boatie Rows’, ‘When We Get Married’, ‘Oh When The Saints’ and ‘Fur We’re No Awa Tae Bide Awa’.

“Everyone was up on their feet singing, dancing and waving their hankies, which is a firm Fishermen’s Walk tradition,” said Jeananne.

Comment cards completed on the night left many positive messages, including: “It’s been wonderful catching up with old pals.”

Jeananne said: “Due to the positive comments and enthusiasm for the dance to continue, I have organised for another dance to take place next year on Friday, September 5, which is sparking lots of interest already.”
