A COUNCILLOR has claimed that the local authority has "no plans" to introduce parking charges in Prestonpans.

In March, the Courier reported that Councillor Colin Yorkston suggested that a consultation on parking charges in Prestonpans, similar to one which recently took place in North Berwick, could take place in October or November of this year.

But during during last month's meeting of Prestonpans Community Council, ward councillor Mr Yorkston told members that, due to businesses being scattered around the town rather than in a central location, East Lothian Council would not be bringing in fees for parking.

Mr Yorkston said at the meeting: "[The council] have no plans to proceed with parking charges in Prestonpans.

"There was a general consensus that shops, businesses and residential properties were dispersed all over the town and high street."

DJ Johnston-Smith, community council chair, responded by saying: "That is great news."

The Courier approached the council following Mr Yorkston's comments.

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “At a council meeting earlier this year, it was agreed that parking management consultations for the five remaining towns [other than North Berwick] would be carried out concurrently.

"Specific proposals, as well as the timeline for these consultations, will be set out in due course.

"No decisions have been made at this time.”
