HADDINGTON High Street was transformed into 1970s St Andrews at the weekend as movie cameras rolled.

Filming for Borges & Me took place on Sunday and Monday and a number of shopfronts were transformed to be in keeping with the movie.

Borges & Me is based on Jay Parini’s novelised memoir and tells the story of a surreal journey through Scotland as a graduate student in St Andrews in the 1970s.

As such, the changed Haddington shopfronts were all in ’70s style and many made reference to the Fife town.

Also making an appearance on the street were a number of retro vehicles, including 1970s-style buses, while a Vietnam War protest also made its way down High Street for the movie.

The war was also referenced in a mock news poster on the door of ‘Market Street News & Sundries Newsagents’ – which stood in for the VPZ vape shop on High Street.

A number of period-style notices in the shop’s window were also visible advertising everything from boat trips to the Isle of May to summer beach volleyball, as well as a pram for sale for £6.

A full road closure took place on Sunday throughout the day, with parking also suspended as the team were keen to avoid seeing any modern vehicles, while filming also took place at the western end of High Street on Monday morning and early afternoon outside Diggory’s café, which became ‘Diggory’s Books’ and ‘MacArthur’s’ café for the movie.

Filming also took place earlier this month in Gifford, with the Tweeddale Arms among the business featuring in the film.
