THE first baby seal of the season on the island of Craigleith has been spotted on live cameras at the Scottish Seabird Centre.

The grey seal pup was spotted on Monday on the island off the county coast via the webcams controlled by the visitors to the North Berwick centre's Discovery Experience.

Adult grey seals, which can grow up to 2.6 metres in size, are mostly grey in colour, with patches and markings unique to each individual, while the young pups are fluffy and white.

Footage from the island is transmitted live from solar-powered cameras and anyone can watch from the Seabird Centre's website.

When the team at the centre completed their checks on Tuesday morning, they spotted a second pup which had been born overnight.

Any visitor who spots a live birth on one of the webcams wins a junior membership pack, which includes a year's free entry for a child with a 50 per cent discount for their accompanying adult.
