A MUSSELBURGH-BASED dementia singing group treated MSPs to a performance at the Scottish Parliament.

Thirty members of Let’s Sing sang I Am The Song, which they first recorded at Castlesound Studios, Pencaitland, working with Luminate, Scotland’s creative ageing organisation, and award-winning singer/songwriter Boo Hewerdine.

Written by Boo, the track is available for use by Luminate’s network of singing groups across Scotland.

Boo and award-winning singer Hannah Rarity, who took part in the recording, were also guests at the event hosted by Michelle Thomson MSP at the Scottish Parliament.

Let’s Sing, led by song leader, singer and composer Penny Stone, meets weekly and supports people living with dementia in the local community by learning and singing a cappella harmony songs together.

This “supports physical and cognitive wellness as well as creating a peer support space for those living with a diagnosis, and their partners, family, friends and carers”.

The group formerly met at the Brunton Hall, parts of which are currently closed following a roof survey, so members are now based at the Fisherrow Centre.

The singers enjoyed lunch during their visit to the Scottish Parliament and gave a 15-minute performance of three songs in the garden lobby as MSPs returned to the debating chamber.

New members need to contact the group before attending a session. For more information, go to singing.luminatescotland.org/choir-in formation/lets-sing or phone 0131 669 2888 or email lets.sing.brunton@gmail.com
