PLANS to add more than 350 new homes to the edge of an East Lothian village have been revealed.

The southern edge of Whitecraig would dramatically change under the proposals for 331 homes, 24 flats and two retail/commercial units.

Members of the public got the chance to see early plans for the site at two public consultation events held in Whitecraig Village Hub earlier this year.

Now, developers Bellway Homes Limited and Buccleuch Property Development have submitted detailed plans and could find out next spring if their scheme has met with the approval of East Lothian Council.

The application includes more than a dozen different house types and is made up of 102 three-bedroom properties for sale, alongside a further 144 four-bedroom homes and 19 five-bedroom properties.

Also included in the plans are 90 affordable homes.

Drawings included with the application show that the affordable housing would be a mix of two-bedroom flats, bungalows and mid-terrace properties (46), three bedroom end-terrace homes (34) and four-bedroom properties (10).

Three main vehicle access points would be created, with traffic entering and exiting the site from Salters Road, Dean Court and a local road to the south of the site.

According to the developers, the public consultations brought “general support for the development of the site amongst the local community”.

There was “general opposition” to a new village hub and instead support for “a new shop/local centre” instead.

However, concerns were raised regarding access and potential traffic issues associated with the site.

Meanwhile, a single-storey building with “a modern, commercial appearance” is proposed for the shop/local centre; it will be capable of housing two businesses but also have the flexibility to become one unit or be subdivided further.

The development would come nearly six years after permission was given for another sizeable development at the opposite end of the village.

Wallace Land Investments was given permission to build 250 new homes off the village’s Cowpits Road.
