THE latest on ambitious plans to create a skatepark, climbing wall and bowling alley in Dunbar will be revealed next month.

Discussions to create a multi-million-pound facility between the A1 and the East Coast Main Line have been ongoing for more than year.

A consultation event was held in February and theSpace Dunbar, which is behind the proposals, will update members of the public on its plans on November 27.

A spokesperson for the group described the proposed facility as "a lively multi-generational leisure, sport and entertainment venue, powered by youth for the whole community".

Ahead of the exhibition, which takes place from 2pm to 8pm, the plans will be taken to Dunbar Grammar School for pupils and staff to view.

The spokesperson said: "Young people have always been at the heart of our efforts in our community and it is important to us that we take our ideas directly to young people.

"We are grateful to the school and its headteacher John Johnstone for this opportunity.

"We know that our proposals are ambitious and will be challenging to realise, but we are determined to do all we can working with our community to make it happen.

"The driving motivation of theSpace Scotland CIC is to create spaces and places that bring opportunities to young people to develop social connections, learn new skills through doing things they enjoy and building their confidence.

"Everything we do will be within the community, celebrating young people as part of our community, as people who can create change and positive actions.

"theSpace Dunbar is the long term vision but we are also focused on the short term and what we can do now to help young people help themselves to make their community a better place.

"We are lucky to have a dedicated and talented professional team supporting us in our work, led by EMA Architecture and Design who are based in Edinburgh but with a strong Dunbar connection.

"Taking on a major planning application is a huge undertaking and it is not possible for a small community organisation to do this without experienced and committed professional support.

"We are also grateful to the many funders who have got behind the journey to theSpace Dunbar as well as supporting our day to day work in the here and now. It's a team effort and our team needs to be the whole community."

Early plans for the site at Dunbear Point were shown at Hallhill Sports Centre, where the latest exhibition will take place.

Among the proposals were a flexible rehearsal and performance auditorium, which would be suitable for cinema, gigs and theatre.

Drawings also highlighted the possibility of an indoor and outdoor skate park, indoor bouldering climbing walls, four 10-pin bowling lane, indoor and outdoor café, bar and social spaces.

theSpace Dunbar was also quick to thank various groups, including Viridor, East Lothian Council and Dunbar Community Council, for their financial support.

The spokesperson added: “The idea long term is to run a financially sustainable community facility that can generate enough revenue to cover all of our operational costs and create profit to reinvest in our core purpose.

“Until that time comes, we are dependent on generating funding support and every contribution makes it possible for us to develop and action our plans.”
