NEW pedestrian crossings could be created on two of Dunbar’s busiest roads.

Concerns about the safety of people trying to cross Spott Road and Queen’s Road have been raised at meetings of the town’s community council.

Now, consideration could be given to creating two pedestrian crossings, which it is hoped would have little impact on vehicles, on the two streets.

On Queen’s Road, there is already a traffic island outside Bellevue Court.

It was hoped that the crossing could possibly be put in place there.

Meanwhile, there is a bus shelter on the western side of the road on Spott Road before the junction with Queen’s Road.

It was suggested that the bus stop – not the shelter – could be moved slightly further away from the junction to improve visibility for those looking to cross.

Kevin Searle, from Dunbar Community Council, has started drawing up plans for the crossings.

Speaking ahead of the group’s meeting on Monday evening, he said: “This is just in very early discussions.

“I’m going to try to draw something up for the meeting so there is something I can present to them.

“I will mock up a piece on Google Earth and make it show what I am intending.”

Previously, East Lothian Council looked at the possibility of putting in traffic lights at the junction of Queen’s Road and Spott Road.

However, the idea did not win favour with a number of residents opposite the junction, who were concerned about where they would park and also the possibility of vehicles queuing up outside their homes.

Mr Searle stressed that neither of the proposed crossings would feature traffic lights but instead would work as a traditional zebra crossing.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: "We are continuing to explore potential solutions to enable delivery of this planning obligation at this junction in the interests of improving road safety and will be consulting with local elected members, the community council and area partnership in due course.”
