A COUNTY man who grabbed a supermarket security guard by the neck during a struggle has been jailed.

Craig Douglas appeared from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court for sentencing last Thursday.

The court was told that Douglas had been sentenced to serve a period of 400 days in custody during a hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh the previous day.

The High Court sentence was an unexpired portion of a previous jail term imposed due to Douglas committing the supermarket offence after he had been released early from a separate matter.

Sheriff Joseph Stewart sentenced Douglas to serve a concurrent 13-week custodial term as punishment for the latest offence, which was carried out on August 8.

The court previously heard that Douglas, of Northfield, Tranent, was within the Asda store on Sandpiper Drive, Edinburgh, when he became involved in an altercation with security officer Stewart Ballantine.

The employee was said to have approached 29-year-old Douglas after he set an alarm off while attempting to leave the store.

He was challenged and, during the incident, Douglas pushed the guard before grabbing Mr Ballantine by the neck, where he “applied pressure”, leading to the guard “having trouble breathing”.

The court heard that Mr Ballantine managed to take Douglas to the ground, where he was subsequently restrained until police could arrive a short time later.

Officers viewed the CCTV footage of the incident and Douglas was cautioned and charged with assault and theft charges.

Douglas pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Ballantine and had a not guilty plea to stealing a quantity of alcohol accepted by the Crown.
