A PORT Seton man has been banned from contacting a woman he assaulted and told he must pay money to a police fund after attacking a police officer.

Craig Thomson, 25, grabbed hold of his victim by the neck and pushed her on the body during an incident in Edinburgh earlier this year.

Thomson pinned the woman to a bed and repeatedly inserted his finger into her mouth, whereby he cut her gum.

He then dragged the woman from the bedroom and slapped her to the face, all to her injury, at the property at the Capital’s St Peters Buildings on August 23.

Police were called out to the disturbance and Thomson, of Poplar Park, was arrested and charged.

During the arrest procedure, Thomson was said to have lashed out at PC Ewan McMillan and kicked the officer to the groin.

Thomson had pleaded guilty to both charges at at an Edinburgh Sheriff Court hearing earlier this year and he was back in the dock for sentencing last Monday.

Sheriff Julius Komorowski sentenced Thomson to carry out 167 hours of unpaid work and issued him with a non-harassment order whereby he cannot have any contact with the woman for the next three years.

The sheriff also ordered him to pay a £250 restitution order that will go towards a fund set up to provide support services for victims of assault on police employees.

Restitution orders are a new financial penalty available to the courts for those convicted of assaulting police officers.

The orders came into force on February 10, 2021, under section 90 of the Police and Fire Reform Act 2012.
