RESIDENTS and businesses using North Berwick town centre can expect disruption later this month as three key roads are resurfaced.

East Lothian Council has announced that North Berwick High Street, Westgate and Church Road will all be closed to traffic, in different phases, to allow the work to take place.

The project, says the local authority, has been “carefully planned to minimise inconvenience to business and residents”.

This includes “reversing” some one-way systems in the town centre to assist vehicle access.

Works will be carried out in three stages over seven working days, from Monday, October 21, to Tuesday, October 29; no weekend work will be carried out and all roads will be open on Saturday and Sunday.

In March, “interim repairs” to fill potholes on North Berwick High Street took place and, as planned, “full resurfacing” is now to take place. A council statement said:“Resurfacing works are due to be undertaken on North Berwick’s High Street, Westgate and Church Road over seven days from October 21, excluding weekends.

“Phase 1: High Street (Market Place to Church Road) closed Monday, October 21, to Wednesday, October 23; “Phase 2: Westgate (Church Road to Westend Place) closed Thursday, October 24, Friday, October 25, and Monday, October 28; “Phase 3: Church Road closed Tuesday, October 29.

“Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access will be maintained throughout, refuse and recycling bins will be emptied as normal and local access will be maintained where practical to affected sections of road.

“A diversion route will be in place during each phase of works for all other traffic.”

Tom Reid, East Lothian Council’s, head of infrastructure, said: “Resurfacing of these areas has been carefully planned to minimise inconvenience to business and residents by, for example, undertaking works in phases and reversing the one-way systems on Market Place, Church Road and Westend Place at points to allow traffic and buses to continue to access High Street as much as possible.

“Roads officers will be visiting businesses to let them know of the works and access arrangements during the period.

“We undertook temporary repair work in the area in March following discussions with North Berwick Community Council, and had plans in place to carry out this full resurfacing in autumn outwith the town’s busy summer period to reduce impact.

“We are grateful to the local community for their support during the works, which we know many have been keen to see progress.”
