DOZENS of tins and packets of food have been handed over to Haddington Day Centre and East Lothian Foodbank by kind-hearted schoolchildren.

Youngsters and staff at The Compass School made their way to Haddington West Church for their annual harvest thanksgiving service last week.

The Rev John Vischer spoke to the children about appreciating what they had at harvest time and the joy that could come from sharing with others.

The children sang their harvest songs and hymns, and gave thanks for another harvest time.

There was also a special harvest offering taken up for the service with a large collection of gifts of tins and packets of food, which the children had brought into school that morning.

The gifts were then taken to Haddington Day Centre by primary seven children and staff for distribution to the centre’s clients.

A number of gifts were also donated to East Lothian Foodbank.

Mark Becher, headmaster at the school on Haddington’s West Road, said: “As part of our annual Global Citizenship Week, the children have spent time considering how they can ‘Make The World A Better Place’ have and discussed the importance of sharing what we have with others; a theme which Mr Vischer spoke about during our service of thanksgiving.

“Each year, the school has a harvest collection and we have been very pleased to make gifts of these to the elderly in the community through the day centre in Haddington.

“For many years, we have had a strong link with the day centre and it is always great for the youngest members of the community to be able to have the opportunity to help the older citizens of the town.”
