Now, nearby residents are saying "enough is enough".

Over the weekend, firefighters spent more than 15 hours hosing down the blaze at the former hospital, as residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed by the police due to the extensive fumes.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has attended fires on multiple occasions at the former hospital in recent months, leading to residents calling on NHS Lothian to speed up the process of offloading the site to its preferred buyer so the land can be developed as soon as possible.

The interior of the premises that were set alight has been burnt to a crisp, with one section of the building completely caved in, bricks scattered and the roof collapsed.

One person, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Enough is enough.

"We need NHS Lothian to work with whoever they have lined up to get this place developed as soon as possible because it is becoming a trouble hotspot and it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.

"There are fires up at this hospital at least once a month and there will probably be trouble that we don't even hear about going on."

Another resident told the Courier: "Someone or anyone needs to do something now; every other week or month there is trouble and I really worry about my children's safety."

The hospital closed in 2010 and has been for sale since 2016.

In May, NHS Lothian said that a "preferred buyer" for the hospital had been secured.

Following the latest fire, Morag Campbell, Director of Estates and Facilities, NHS Lothian: "Details of the proposed sale of the former Edenhall Hospital site are commercially confidential, and so we cannot share any information on this.

“Our team is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the site. As part of our ongoing efforts, we are in the process of safely removing some damaged structures and reducing potential hazards. We continue to work closely with our security team to implement robust measures to deter vandalism, antisocial behaviour and illegal activity.

“We value our relationship with locals who regularly use the grounds for dog walking and ask that they continue to report any issues or concerns. We would like to thank members of the public for their continued cooperation as we strive to maintain the safety of the site.”
