TWO shelters in a state of "disrepair" in North Berwick are to get makeovers after nearly £37,000 in funding was secured.

In the summer last year, the Rotary Club of North Berwick showed interest in renovating one shelter on Tantallon Terrace and another just off Glasclune Gardens, above East Links Putting Green, following an initiative introduced by the King after his coronation.

A group of veterans in North Berwick are hoping that the shelter just off Glasclune Gardens will be named 'Veterans View' after campaigning for it to be revamped.

The Rotary Club has now been granted £18,500 by the North Berwick Trust's grant group, £10,000 by East Lothian Council, £4,000 from the Common Good fund, £1,045 from the Rotary Foundation, and £3,250 raised by local Rotary volunteers.

Bruce Wilson, membership convenor of North Berwick Rotary and lead organiser of the project, said: "We are now in a position to move the project forward having obtained plans and proposals from three companies, with the preferred contractor now selected.

"Both shelters will be refurbished exactly as they are now and, once the work is completed, local folks and visitors will once again be able to enjoy this beautiful area, relaxing in shelters which will be fit for purpose for many years into the future once again."

The Courier previously spoke to Martin Reimann, who is spearheading the veterans' efforts, on the news that the shelter was now set to be refurbished.

He said: "We are delighted that the shelters will be renovated and want to thank the Rotary Club of North Berwick for all of their hard work.

"At the moment, it is early days and we are hoping the shelter just off Glasclune Gardens will be named Veterans View and we look forward to working with the club on this."

A council spokesperson, said: "Our amenities and property teams have been working with North Berwick Rotary, who have fundraised in addition to a council contribution to progress with the refurbishment of both shelters.

"We will be meeting with the Rotary in the coming week to discuss this project further and hope to appoint a contractor shortly before holding a meeting with all interested parties."

Jane McMinn, chair of North Berwick Trust’s grants group, said: "North Berwick Trust has awarded a capital grant of £18,500 to the Rotary Club of North Berwick towards the refurbishment of both shelters and the veterans group are working with the Rotary to deliver the Glasclune Terrace project.

"The trust are pleased to see these shelters, which are currently in a state of disrepair, restored for locals and visitors to enjoy."

It is currently unknown when the refurbishments will take place.
