REVISED plans for alterations to Dunbar's telephone exchange have been drawn up after traces of asbestos were found.
BT plans to install the ‘fibre’ broadband rollout network programme, as part of the Government’s initiative for high-speed broadband, to every home by 2025.
Therefore, BT needs to upgrade the broadband and landline technology for the area served by the telephone exchange on the town’s Countess Crescent.
A design and access statement notes that plans were submitted previously.
It says: “As part of this upgrade, additional ventilation is required in one of the rooms at the above premises.
“This is an amendment to an original application that was made three months ago.
“Unfortunately, traces of asbestos was found in the cladding on the north elevation.
“It is now proposed to create two openings on the ground floor west elevation.”
BT Group PLC, which is behind the plan, stressed that the site “will not be developed or enlarged in any way” and that the appearance of the building “will not materially change”.
