A COUPLE who got engaged in Lidl have been promised a "special" gift from the discount supermarket giant.

Last week, Andrew Stevenson and Kim Graham spoke to the Courier after Andrew proposed in the Prestonpans High Street store's vegetable aisle, three months on from the couple meeting through an online dating site.

Now, Lidl have promised the couple a "special gift to celebrate their engagement".

A Lidl spokesperson said: "From the shopping aisle to the wedding aisle, it’s safe to say that there was a Lidl love at our Prestonpans store last week!

"We knew our bakery was swoon-worthy but what a way to ‘ring’ in the weekly shop.

"We'd love Andrew and Kim to pop back into store as the team have organised a special gift to celebrate their engagement."

Andrew, 36, of Prestonpans, went down on one knee in the store last Wednesday afternoon.

His now-fiancée Kim, 35, is currently living in Ayr but is planning to move to Prestonpans after finishing her readings at the University of Strathclyde in English studies.

Andrew, a charity worker in the town and vice-chair of Prestonpans Community Council, told the Courier: "You go to Lidl for so many things, like shopping and doing everyday things like that, and it suddenly popped in my head that she was the person that I wanted to spend my life with.

"I just thought, Lidl isn't your most traditional place to propose, but I wanted to be different, I wanted it to be a day that we both remember, and we both will remember getting engaged in Lidl for a very long time.

"That is effectively why I did that: I did it because I love her and my heart and mind were aligned that I wanted to marry this woman and that is why I proposed. It was just love at first sight."

Kim told the Courier: "Andrew is the best thing I got delivered online and I know our relationship will stay fresh, natural and full of unexpected romance and humour.

"I love that Andrew can make me smile and now, every time we go shopping, I will remember that Andrew loves me so much you proposed to me with my messy hair and sandy shoes, and you and I [Andrew] both know that the most important thing is building a life together filled with joy."
