A KIND nurse from Prestonpans is organising a fundraiser to help patients feel more at home – and has recently received a gift from charity campaigner Johnnie Meechan.

Erin Connachan, who has lived in the town all her life and attended Preston Lodge High School, now works as a staff nurse at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and recently has been working hard to sell raffle tickets.

Last month she put out a request for raffle donations, collecting more than 60 prizes which are now up for grabs and will be drawn during an event on October 8.

Prizes include a weekend Mini Cooper hire, Beats headphones, a Rangers museum tour for four, a mini yoga retreat day, £100 Kwik Fit voucher, a range of hampers and more.

The fundraiser is raising money for Ward 208, which Erin works in, taking care of a range of patients, aiming to help those who may not have any visitors during their hospital stay by reducing feelings of loneliness.

Erin hopes that items such as games and books will benefit her patients. The biggest potential expense, a TV on wheels, would hopefully provide some entertainment.

The event will also feature a bake sale to raise as much money as possible for the patients.

Fellow kind-hearted fundraiser Johnnie recently saw Erin’s requests and decided to reach out to offer his help.

His charity Johnnie's Journey purchased the TV for the ward outright, along with a mobile stand and DVD player, meaning that the money raised by the raffle can now be spent on other items.

Johnnie set up the charity in 2016 after being diagnosed with a rare terminal cancer called a neuroendocrine tumour, commonly known as NET cancer.

The charity raises money for a variety of local causes while simultaneously raising awareness of the disease.

Johnnie said in a Facebook post: “[I] was more than happy to help, hospital can be a lonely place at the best of times – a TV might take their minds off things even for a wee while.”

Raffle tickets cost £1 each and can be bought by contacting ward 208 at the hospital or by sending an email to Erin at erin.connachan@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk

The fundraising event will be held on Tuesday, October 8, between 10am and 2pm, outside ward 208.
