AN OUTDOOR activity centre which will feature axe throwing and an assault course is getting ready to open next weekend.

Work to transform the site at Whitekirk Hill – previously home to a golf course – is already well under way.

Wild Cairns will feature rope and tyre swings, high walls, slides and four-metre-high cargo nets as obstacles.

Scott Smith and Angus McLeod from the company, which was founded in April, were given permission for the work at the beginning of last month.

And they have wasted little time in getting the one-mile assault course, featuring more than 30 obstacles, set up.

Councillor John McMillan, Provost of East Lothian and East Lothian Council’s spokesperson for environment, economic development and tourism, will officially open the site next Saturday (September 21).

Mr Smith told the Courier that bookings were already filling up for the opening weekend.

He added: “Work to complete the obstacles and our axe throwing area and Airsoft gun range is scheduled to be completed this week and our changing facilities, etc, will be ready for the opening day.”

Half-a-dozen jobs are expected to be created through the business, which is the latest addition to the site.

Already, there is an award-winning spa and a children’s play barn, as well as self-catering lodges.

When permission was given by East Lothian Council, Mr Smith described it as “exciting times” for Wild Cairns.

He said: “Assault courses offer numerous benefits, such as improving physical fitness, building confidence, enhancing teamwork skills, and boosting mental health through outdoor exercise.

“Our course is designed for both adults and children from age eight upwards, ensuring fun and fitness for the whole family.”
