YOUNG cadets made a visit to a local veterans' group in a special event which helped to bring different generations together.

East Lothian Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club provides a monthly space for veterans and their dependents to come together, share experiences and build camaraderie.

People can go along to enjoy breakfast with others who have similar shared experiences, which can help to combat the loneliness that some veterans feel when they leave the services.

The sessions are open to all members of the armed forces family and take place on the first Saturday of each month.

Dunbar Sea Cadets, based off the town's North Road, was formed in 1958 and aims to transform youngsters into “confident, resilient young people who thrive in a complex world”.

On the morning of Saturday, September 7, the cadets visited the breakfast club at Prestonpans Royal British Legion, Rope Walk, to share experiences and discuss the service.

About 30 veterans and a dozen cadets were part of the meeting, and Provost John McMillan was also in attendance.

The meeting began with the young cadets marching smartly around the hall wearing their uniforms.

A cadet then sat at the end of each table and started the meeting with some questions which were thought up in advance.

Mary Goodall, committee member and organiser of the event, said: “It wasn’t long before a good humorous and informative discussion was had by both parties.

“There was just such a buzz of energy.

“Everyone was getting on and talking about the service.

“This was a unique venture and brought an understanding to both the veterans and the cadets.”

After a vote of thanks were given, the cadets marched smartly out of the hall.

Next year, the veterans breakfast club hopes to invite army and RAF cadets to enjoy a similar experience.
