A CELEBRATION to commemorate the opening of a new garden space in Tranent is taking place this weekend, hosted by the Tranent Wombles.

The Wombles, a voluntary group which carries out litter picking in the town, has transformed an unused patch of land into a small forest garden near Foresters Park.

Following months of work from kind-hearted volunteers, the garden is already open and being well used by residents of all ages.

The celebratory event is taking place on Sunday, 2-5pm, and will feature refreshments, activities and entertainment for all.

Cailean the Bagpiper, who plays with Preston Lodge High School Pipe Band, will be opening the event, along with Tait and his Old Grey Fergie tractor.

There will be plenty of activities to keep children entertained, including a circus performer and obstacle course, as well as activities hosted by East Lothian Play Association.

Live music will be performed by the Merry Ukes band, a ukulele group which meets and practises in Macmerry, and Penston Silver band.

A tour of the newly transformed garden will take place from 3pm to 4pm, followed by a cutting of the cake.

Henry Mathias, chair of Tranent Wombles, said: “It has been a real community effort since January to get this garden up and running. There’s been a lot of input from local kids as well.

“This celebratory event is a chance for us to say to the community that the garden is there and available for everyone to use.

“It’s already been really well received so far. It provides a great space for locals in Tranent as a space to sit, meet and hang out.

“This is such an asset to the community.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the event and join Tranent Wombles for the celebrations.
